Vernazza: Cinque Terre’s Most Beautiful Village

It’s easy to see why the Cinque Terre is one of the ultimate destinations for visitors travelling to Italy. The charming fishing villages that huddle on the country’s beautiful coastline are some of the most picturesque in the country, if not the world. Plus, they offer incredible scenery, great hiking routes and a long and fascinating history. There really is something for everyone!

While each one has its own charm, it’s the Cinque Terre village, Vernazza, that arguably captures the most hearts. With its unique characteristics, such as its very own natural harbour, it would be hard to find somewhere more picturesque and ambient. So remember to keep your camera at the ready, because you won’t want to miss this!

A Bit of History

The town of Vernazza in the Cinque Terre dates back to around 1000 AD when it was used as an important base for an influential family. You should be able to spot the crumbling remnants of the old fortifications as you wander around the village. One that you must visit is the medieval castle, Belforte, which was built to protect the residents from pirates.

For about 200 years after this period, the village was an important point for ships and soldiers and turned out to be key in Genoa’s conquest of the Ligurian coast and beyond. You won’t witness any naval battles today, but there’s no doubt that the best way to bask in the region’s beauty is by sea. So, why not jump on a boat tour and immerse yourself in the area’s history?

Highlights to See

Not only is Vernazza in the Cinque Terre a stop on some great hiking trails along the Ligurian coast, but its winding streets promise stunning surprises around every turn.
